2010 ROZZI'S TAVERN/LAKESHORE ACE ICE DERBY BIG PIKE

Congratulations to Lance Chapney for catching the winning Northern Pike during the 2010 Rozzie's Tavern/Lakeshore Ace Hardware Ice Derby, held this past weekend.
Lance was fishing near the sandbar and iced the fish at 2:44 p.m.  With the derby closing and weigh-in's concluding at 3:00 p.m., Lance didn't have much time to get to Lakeshore Ace to enter the fish.
Lance jumped on his sled to cross Malletts Bay, hitting speeds of up to 90 miles per hour, losing the fish once while crossing a pressure crack.
Once he hit the shore, he was off and running.  He made it to the weigh-in with one minute to spare!  Way to go Lance!
Lance's fish weighed an impressive 18.09 pounds, had a 19" girth, and was 41" long!

Rumor has it, that Lance yelled out: "Dockside Bait is what it ate!!!"

Congratulations Lance!

PULLING PERCH AND PIKE

Saturday, Cathy and I got a chance to get out and pull some yellow perch thru the ice of Lake Champlain.
Cathy managed two Northerns on her jig rod. She did an excellent job fighting both fish on four pound test Berkley Fireline Micro Ice.
Pike aren't our targeted species, but they sure were a riot for her on light tackle!

Cathy had never caught  pike before, these were her first!
She happily released them both to catch another day.

Oh yea, we managed a nice bunch of yellow perch to take home.

NEW STATE RECORD WALLEYE TAKEN FROM LAKE CHAMPLAIN

Vermont has the best walleye fishing in New England, and Richard Levesque’s latest entry in Vermont’s fish record program underscores that point. Levesque shattered the previous state record for walleye on February 10, when he caught a walleye weighing 14.55 lbs. through the ice on Lake Champlain.

Levesque, who lives nearby in West Swanton, caught the big fish at 9:00 p.m., using a tipup baited with a golden shiner. The walleye measured 32 ½ inches long and had an impressive 20-inch girth.

The previous Vermont state record walleye weighed 13.44 lbs and was caught in the Clyde River in 1997 by Doug Niles of Newport Center, Vt.

The fish was examined by State Fisheries Biologist Brian Chipman at Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s office in Essex.

SAFETY ON THE ICE----IT NEEDS TO COME FIRST!

ALWAYS, ALWAYS know the ice conditions. ALWAYS CHECK the ice conditions OFTEN. Drill test holes OFTEN and KNOW the ice conditions.
NEVER, NEVER drive over a pressure crack.
Need that be repeated or said any other way?
This picture was taken today, 2/8/2010 from the tip of Mills Point, Malletts Bay:

Super Bowl Weekend Perch on Lake Champlain

I thought I'd be far to busy to hit the ice this weekend but somehow I managed two short trips.
Friday evening I hit the ice for a quick 2 hour perch pulling session.  Came home with 21 keeper perch and threw back just as many small ones. (I hope to meet up with them in a few more years!)

Friday's Catch

This morning (Super Bowl Sunday) I figured I'd sneak out while everyone else was still asleep and see what I could do.   Cold and windy on the ice is what I faced.  No shack, no protection, no worries.  I only had about a two hour window.

Again, 21 nice keeper perch.  Just enough for Cathy and I to have for dinner some night.  This morning the perch were nicer.  I only threw back 4 small ones.  Maybe the larger ones had come in out of deeper water for the night?

Sunday's Catch

Yours Truly, a little cold, headed in.

BOWFISHING

I've recently decided to take up the sport of bow-fishing...
Fishing, with a bow and arrow.
It sounds like a real challenge, one that I believe I'm up to.
However,,,
I'm in somewhat of a slump.
My trainer, Joy Tolookat, (pictured below) says I have a difficult time concentrating on my target.
