WHEN...

When I pulled a 19” chunk of Chrome out of the box to show DaBoat and it jumped out of my hands and back into the lake, Ben and I laughed so hard and for so long, we permanently damaged our faces.

When a monster chunk of Chrome that rivaled Jodi Bushway’s (see 2011 Vt Fish/Game Digest cover) shot ten feet out of the water, then came out 2 feet again, and Ben and I realized it had just snapped his cheater, our chins hit the floor.

When we had hit about six or eight fish within the first ½ hour, Ben and I quit counting.

When Crazy Ivan called me to get me to a hotter area, we didn't make it because there were too many fish in the way.

When we had a triple and landed all three fish, we had scales, slime, lures, cheaters, a slide-diver, three fish, a net, and tangled line under our feet.

When I was talking to Thorny and he jokingly told me I was rude for the “fish-on” hang-up, I hung up again to help Ben net another 4 pound landlocked.

When I ran nothing but honeybees with green on them, over green/white vertical blades, 19’ down…well, I couldn't relax much.

When we hit the shore-line, loaded the boat, and headed down the road…we had (have) permanent smiles etched onto our faces.

When I emptied the live-well, I found smelt and alewife’s hiding among the ice cubes.

She Ain't Pretty...She Just Looks That Way!

Finally...
Finally a Lake Champlain Landlocked Atlantic Salmon worth entering into the Vermont Master Angler Program.
I'd been fishing Lake Champlain near Burlington for less than an hour when this bruiser hit.

I was on the boat solo...dealing with a Lake Trout about the same size when all hell broke loose.
What a Chinese fire-drill that must of looked like!
The flailing of myself from one side of the boat to the other, biceps flexing, forearms burning, needle-nose pliers squeezing and twisting, cheaters tangling, net spinning end over end, fish on, fish H8 me.

8.22 pound, 27.5 inches of pure Lake Champlain Landlocked Salmon Energy!

Tamiron MP6 Honeybee in Fire-tiger, pulled 15' below the surface by a clear Slide-Diver Lite-Bite.

Not sure...
But this might of just bumped me into the top spot in the LCI
All-Season tournament.
I'm still watching for updated results!

Game on.

GREASERS AND GOLD

From going through the ice up to my belly on Sunday, to trolling for Lake Trout on Lake Champlain on Wednesday and Thursday.
Who'd a thunk it?

Cold and chilly on Wednesday morning after hard soaking rain on Tuesday.  The roads were slick, the windshield on Rob's boat  had to be scraped, and the fish were waiting.

Launching at the mouth of the Winooski River was a cinch.  It's well protected, even from the high flows and floating debris that spring brings.

To the lake we motor, slowly through the logs, sticks, trees caught on sand-bars, and bits and pieces of ice.  Find the mud-line from the flows of the big river...find fish.

One fish, two fish, three fish, four.
Cowboy's fish...

And Rob's got more...
Ah, okay that's getting corny...enough of that!

Robs wearing gloves, is he afraid to touch them?
No way...he cleans, preps, displays, and sells fish for a living!
He's getting ready to clean fish...
Always an exciting time.  Whenever Rob whips out his knife and lays it to flesh...
good things happen.

A rod on my side of the boat fires...
reeling, fighting...
fighting and reeling.
A pleasant surprise!
Although out of season, this beautiful hen Walleye comes unwillingly to the net.
7.5 pounds of golden fish porn that was headed up the river to tease and play with the fellas.

Kissed, nursed, and gently petted she slides away to continue her journey.

Total to the net for the day, seven Greasy Lake Trout and one Golden Lake Champlain Walleye.
Three bleeders had to be kept for the smoker.

Thursday was a different day.
Ron asked me to join him on his boat for three hours.
We'll meet at nine he says.

I get up before day-break.  My boat is still stuck behind a big mud-hole and it's 24° outside.
Perfect...
The mud, snow, and slop is frozen solid...time to free the Razzle Dazzle from its Hibernation Den and get it out where she can be summerized.

I meet Ron at the ramp at nine and off we go.
Again, thru debris to the lake...in search of Greasers.
We enter the lake:
Crap...skim ice.  Too cold during the night, no breeze and the water skimmed over.
There's boats to the North a mile or so...we motor out.
Crunch, crunch, crackle-crunch.
And start setting up.
Slow...slow...too slow.
Changing lures, putting out lead-core, set up a rigger.
Nothing.
Then a flurry...
fish on! fish off.
Easy come...easy go.
Another
Another
and Another.

We let them all go...
And I think Ron flipped me the bird as he hid behind a fish.

A gorgeous day...

WORLD RECORD LAKE TROUT CAUGHT ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN?

Nicholas Palmer, age 15, of Alburgh, Vermont landed this 16.8 pound Lake Trout on 2-pound test line on Lake Champlain!

Quite possibly a world line class record taken thru the ice.

Simply put: AMAZING!

THE ICE IS NEAR

The ice is near...
It's time to check out the gear, clean it, refresh the line, fire the heaters.  Open the portable shanties to air out and get inspected.

It won't be long now...

Here's a highlight from last year when My Grandson Justin and I tagged teamed a nice lake trout on four pound test Berkley Fireline while jigging for yellow perch on Lake Champlain!

Yup...

BETTER THAN WATCHING SQUIRRELS

Yesterday was opening day of the 2010 Vermont Firearms Deer Hunting Season.
Since I gave up hunting several years ago, I decided to drag some steel on Lake Champlain in hopes of picking up some Landlocked Atlantic Salmon, Steel-head, and Brown Trout.
As I trolled by Jon, he shot this picture of me...Thanks Jon!

What a beautiful day on the lake.  Virtually no winds, very slight chop, and temps that got up into the 40's! (It was 27° F when I left the house shortly after day-break.)

I didn't set the world on-fire but enjoyed fishing on the lake.  I ended the day with a half dozen "clone" Landlocked Salmon and a few Lake Trout.  I kept two of the clones to enjoy on the grill, and found plenty of help cleaning them from two of our Grand-daughters when I got home.

Haley is showing off two of the twenty small alewife's we found in the stomach contents of one of the fish!

Thanks for the help girls!

FROSTBITE FLEET SALMON SHOOTOUT 2010

And the winner is...

Ron Winter of Essex Junction Vermont with a dandy 23 inch Landlocked weighing in at 5.11 pounds.
Congratulations Ron!
Ron caught the winning fish on one of Champlain's hottest lures, a Honeybee from Tamiron Sporting Goods.

The second annual Frostbite Fleet Salmon Shootout was an absolute riot.  A fun FREE event with a Bar-B-Que at the end to wrap up the day.

It's tough to find the big fish in open water at this time of the year on Lake Champlain, but three dandy, leaping, bright silver, powerhouse, Lake Champlain Landlocked Atlantic Salmon made it to the weigh station after the five and a half hour event.

Second place in the event went to a new comer, Bill Snell of New Haven Vermont with a 4.14 pound landlocked.  Congratulations Bill!

Lucky for me, I was able to get a decent fish in the box and headed for the weigh-in scheduled for 1 PM.
A beautiful football shaped 4.12 pound salmon hit my line about 45 minutes before time to "quit".  Ben of Dockside Outdoors was on-board with me and netted the beast.  We whooped and hollered and headed in once the fish was safely boxed.  Thanks Ben!

The fish was good for a third place finish.  The trophy won't set on my mantle this year, but the memories of a fun filled event with a great bunch of fisherman will last the rest of my lifetime!

364 days to go untill the next Frostbite Salmon Shootout and I can hardly wait.

Until then, I'll keep at it, often solo, enjoying the jewel we call Lake Champlain and it's wonderful fishery!

Tight lines to all!

LAKE CHAMPLAIN FISHING... DOG-GONE (ALMOST)

What a beautiful fall day to be out on the water.  Lake Champlain was fore-casted to have up to three foot waves but I found a totally different scene when I arrived.  Granted I didn't get on the water untill just after the noon hour, and the folks coming off the water said the fishing was hot...untill the wind died down and the lake flattened out.
Well, they were right.  No problem with rough water and the fish were inactive.  Landlocked Salmon, Brown Trout, and Steel-head are all present but laughing at my spoons as I washed them behind the boat.  I tried every tactic I could think of and every color in the rainbow...including the rainbow!!!
I saved the day by managing to net two Lake Trout that were on the smaller side, but they brought a smile to my face just the same.
Released to be caught again another day, to bring a smile to another anglers face.

Dog-gone...(almost)

Then my phone rang...
My wife was at the Mall in South Burlington when she heard the description of her SUV with her license plate number come over the intercom.
It seems that some scumbag broke into her vehicle to steal our wonderful family pet.  CoKo Pug.

Scared but uninjured, CoKo was still in the SUV.  The rear hatch broken open, shards of glass everywhere...

Now...
I'm fishing for a different species.  I'm fishing for the guilty party.
Guilty beware!

DOUBLE DIGITS, SMALLER FISH

Cathy and I finally got on the water the other day and it was beautiful fall day to be on Lake Champlain.
We launched out of Converse Bay in search of salmon activity and found it right away.
When we launched, we immediately headed over to Whallons Bay to get out of the wind to set up.  I hadn't even got all our lines in the water when the first fish hit...
A dandy leaping silver Landlocked Atlantic Salmon.

The bigger mature fish are difficult to find in the lake right now as most of them are spawning in the rivers.
But...that doesn't mean there aren't any Landlocks to have fun with.  The fish that were stocked in the early spring, have been eating well and enjoying life in Lake Champlain.  These fish are now of legal size for the most part, most of them being between 16 and 17 inches, fat like footballs, and full of energy!

Four of the 12 fish we netted came home for the table.
I'm thinking the nice thin fillets will be absolutly delicious lightly breaded and pan fried...
or poached, or grilled, or broiled...
(Any way but loose!)

The hot color was pink or orange.  A gold MP-6 Honeybee from Tamiron Sporting Goods with orange, and a silver Speedy Shiner with pink took the most fish.  I tried lots of stuff to see what would work.  I couldn't seem to get any fish on green, purple, or blue.

The fish as of right now, are higher in the water column.  All our fish came from 15 to 48 feet down over 200 plus feet of water.
We'll see if that changes when the big mature fish return to the lake!

WHAT FISH SEE

What Fish See: written by Dr. Kageyama, an optometrist and avid fisherman, has brought a whole new meaning to the fishing lure industry!  Many of us for years believed that fish could only see in black, white, and shades of gray.  Many of the original studies were done with the visible spectrum, and with preference tests and specific fish.

The scientific approach that Dr. Kageyama has displayed in his book reveals that when the physical composition of the (fish) eye itself is measured and subjected to very close scientific scrutiny, the chemicals contained within the eye are closely examined, and other tests are performed, the following facts (not theory) are revealed:

· With normal side to side motion that fish have, their vision is a 360° ball.  That's right, they can see in front, back, and on both sides without any blind spots.

· Fish have additional cones in their eyes, which we do not have, which allow them to see into the ultraviolet wavelengths.  If you have two colors of red and one of them florescent, humans may not be able to tell the difference.  Fish can!  The florescent red basically begins at the end of the visible (human) spectrum, beyond blue and ultraviolet.  They also have a much more sensitive ability to pick up photoluminescence (glow-in-the-dark).

I'm not trying to steal Dr. Kageyama's information.
I would suggest that you read the book from cover to cover, over and over.

In the meantime, there's a way to allow you a better appreciation of what the fish see. A lot of displays, events, etc... feature black-light to create an eerie image of bright colors.  The same can be achieved with an ultraviolet flashlight so that you can see what the fish see.  It's a revolutionary concept that is already well ingrained into  lures being designed for the Great Lakes.  Those that have followed this path have created a dramatic impact on the market.  For a very reasonable price, you can have this capability in your own hands. Take it with you before you purchase more fishing tackle. Wouldn't it be better to present to the fish what they can see, rather than what you can see?
At just under four inches long, this powerful little U.V. Black-light Flashlight from Tamiron Sporting Goods is small enough to fit in any anglers pocket, tackle box, or in my case, my "kit" of lures, blanks, tapes, and tools I use to customize baits to my liking.

Here's an example of UV tape and paint as seen with the U.V. Black-light.
The top photo is of two honeybee's taken in natural light.
The photo on the bottom is of the same two spoons, but was taken in low light conditions, photo flash "off", illumintated with the UV Black-light flashlight.  What fish see in low light conditions!

I've added this great tool from Tamiron Sporting Goods to my arsenal, and if your looking to "get the edge", you should too!

BUSTED...

BUSTED...
Zzzzziiiinnnnggggg-zinggg zing-zing, broke off, snapppp,
Ka-pinnggggg...

I don't get broke off very often, but I managed to loose two nice Landlocked Salmon on Saturday.

I was joined by my eleven year old Grandson Justin and a fishing buddy Matt.  We got a great early start, after driving nearly an hour and launching the boat at Converse Bay on Lake Champlain just after day-light, we were geared up and ready to fish!   We were after Mr. and Mrs. Landlocked Salmon.  These fish are tough to fish for this time of the year, as the majority of them go and hide and get tight lipped prior to spawning.  But, we were up for the challenge, or so we thought.

A lot of the fish being caught this time of the year are the fish that were stocked earlier in the summer.  "Stockers".  Right now, they've been in the lake for several months; eating and growing, and are just under the legal size limit of 15".  They're brightly colored, fat and plump, shaped like little footballs.
But, those aren't our target.  Our target is to find mature fish that are hanging out deep, still on the feed.  Maybe they spawned last year and don't wish to do so this year, or, maybe they just aren't "in the mood".  Anyway, these are the fish we want to hook up with.

The first nice fish to hit sent the reel screaming, yelling for attention.  This was a line set up on a downrigger.  Down 73 and 15 feet back behind the ball on one of my custom honeybees, the orange and green, of the three Amigos.
I grabbed the rod and the fish began to pull.  It made two very nice runs, peeling line and pulling hard, then decided to make a run for the boat.  I reeled like hell but this fish was on a mission, a mission to free itself if it could.  The fish headed along the starboard side of the boat wanting to keep clear of the boat and pass us...untill it tangled in another line, a heavy braided line with a lite bite slide diver running deep.  That's just about where this story ends...I think you know what happens next.
BUSTED...  Dang, what an adrenaline rush.

About an hour later...
The Lite Bite Slide Diver fires.  The rod doubles over hard.  HARD!
The reel starts screaming and I mean SCREAMING!
Zzzzziiiinnngggg-Zzzzziiiinnngggg-Zzzzziiiinnngggg...
If you've ever fished with a slide diver, dipsy diver, or other hard pulling diving device, then you know that the drag on the reel is already set pretty tight.
Well, that drag wasn't stopping this freight train, it wasn't even going to slow him down.  This fish was headed for the abyss, headed down to Davey Jones' locker.
And I lost my cool...
Instead of thinking, and trying to outwit the fish I tried to stop it.  It wasn't to be stopped.  Now with over 250 feet of line out I began to thumb the spool.  NOT the thing to do.  I began to apply pressure with my thumb and the fish still wouldn't slow down.  I applied a little more and felt it happen...
The vibration came all the way up the line to my rod and into my hand.  The sickening ugly explosive release of energy as the five foot, ten pound fluorocarbon leader between the slide diver and the fish gave away.
BUSTED...
Definetly a trophy.
BUSTED...
Lake Champlain Salmo salar, to be caught another day.
I WILL return!

VERMONT STATE RECORD: LANDLOCKED SALMON

Vermont's Landlocked Salmon Record.  12 Pounds, 10.4 ounces.
Taken by Brian Latulippe on October18, 1994.
Lake Champlain
What a beautiful Lake Champlain Landlocked Atlantic Salmon!
The above picture was taken of Brian and his fish at Ron's Bait Shop in Colchester, the day of the catch.  Ron's has since closed it's doors.
Brian caught this beautiful fish while perch fishing at the sand-bar bridge on Lake Champlain.  An area known to have big salmon prowling at certain times.

Below, is a more recent picture of the trophy fish mount.  This is the angler's son, Brian Latulippe Jr, proudly showing off the Vermont record his father caught.

Will the record ever be broken?  With the addition of alewife's for forage and increased sea lamprey control, it might get broken...someday.

Brian doesn't hope that it will, and rightly so!
It's a family treasure.  A treasure they can always be proud of.

I JUST WANT TO FISH

Twenty weeks.
Twenty weeks of pure bliss.
Bliss and fish that is.
Twenty weeks ago I was laid off.   Not a victim of the economy and lack of work mind you, but rather a beneficiary.

That has now come to an end.  Tomorrow I start a new job.
Our society mandates it.
Our society requires it.
I got a taste of retirement.
I can't retire just yet...but someday, someday.

I fished my butt off and had a blast.
I met some new friends and had a chance to fish and share with them.
I fished more in the last twenty weeks than I've ever been able to in my entire life.
I loved every minute of it.
I caught big fish...
I caught little fish...
and fish in between,
the good eaters.

If this new job doesn't work out for me...
then I think I'll just stick to fishin'!

WORKING MAN
I get up at seven, yeah
And I go to work at nine
I got no time for livin'
Yes, I'm workin' all the time
It seems to me
I could live my life
A lot better than I think I am
I guess that's why they call me
They call me the working man
They call me the working man
I guess that's what I am
I get home at five o'clock
And I take myself out a nice, cold beer
Always seem to be wonderin'
Why there's nothin' goin' down here
Well, they call me the working man
I guess that's what I am

Tight lines.
I just want to fish!
Wish me luck.

AND YET ANOTHER LAKE TROUT BENCH-MARK!

Holy Crap!
Not again.
It's been just over a week and another Lake Champlain Lake Trout Record has been set.
This is like, three times this year.
A twenty pounder is just around the corner!

I'm told this fish was weighed on certified scales at 18.96 pounds, is 34-3/4 inches long, and has a 23-1/2 inch girth.
The fish was caught aboard Cloud Nine Charters, piloted by Captain Obe White.
Congratulations to the angler and of course, Captain Obe and his crew!
I'm hoping for a video...

Yup, a twenty pound Lake Trout is in Lake Champlain...
It's just a matter of it not being camera shy!

Hopefully we'll soon see the record broken for Landlocked Atlantic Salmon.  And what better angler than I to do it?
Well...wishful thinking anyway!

MORE "DORKFISH"

Back in June I published a post about Sanman catching and boating a "Dorkfish".  Sanman gave the fish it's name, and did so appropriately.  Since then he has managed to catch another Lake Champlain Landlocked Atlantic Salmon "Dorkfish".

Wednesday, I was able to do the same.
This particular fish didn't have it's tongue sticking out the center of it's throat as Sanman's did, but rather off to the side.
Very Peculiar.

As was Sanman's fish, this fish didn't appear to have been affected by its abnormality.  It was a beautiful fish, healthy, hard fighting, 23 inches long with a big alewife in its belly.  It had been eating well.

After showing these pictures to another fisherman, Matt, he said he also caught one this summer, but failed to get any pictures.  He harvested his also.

I'll get a few pictures off to a Vermont Fish and Game biologist and see what they have to say.  My thoughts are that these fish are victims of previous catch and release, with injuries to show for it!

REELAX

Yesterday Matt and I ventured out onto Lake Champlain aboard his boat "REELAX".  What a terrific name for a boat, as there is no better way to reelax, than to chase Landlocked Atlantic Salmon on Lake Champlain.
We didn't get into a lot of fish, but we did do a lot of reelaxin'!  We dropped a couple nice fish behind the boat, evidence they were "short striking" at our offerings.

Matt did however, manage to boat this nice 22 inch silver.  It hit on a Honeybee KopKar by Tamiron Sporting Goods.

I wasn't able to put a decent Salmon in the net, but did manage a small 5 pound Lake Trout on my light Salmon rod!

ANOTHER BIG LAKE TROUT FROM LAKE CHAMPLAIN

Rumor has it, another Lake Trout Record has been made for Lake Champlain!
I expect we'll keep seeing records being broken, possibly several times a year with this world class fishery improving daily!
This is an impressive fish for Lake Champlain.  Weighted on certified scales, the fish weighed 17.95 pounds, it was 34.75 inches long, and had a girth of 22 inches!

The fish was caught by Laurie Lang while fishing aboard Sure Strike Charters with Captain Rich Greenough.  Visit the Sure Strike Charters website at http://www.fishvermont.com/

Adios You Flying Pig You

Got out on the water at Converse yesterday with Matt, a real fun guy to fish with.
Slow going with lots of shakers and perch was the menu for the day.
Target species: Champlain Landlocked Atlantic Salmon!

We got our lines in the water about 7:30, trolled Thompson's for a while with a dry release or two, shakers and yellow perch.
Tolled over to Split Rock and then headed South. Lots of marks on the screen, pretty much all over, but couldn't get much to hit.
We hung between the Unicorn and Split Rock throwing everything we had at them. Finally a slide diver lite bite set on 1.5, a #2 ring added, 160 feet of line out and a custom taped honeybee MP6 fires.

The line screams from the reel, a great run.
If you've ever fished slide divers, your well aware the drags are already set fairly tight to hold the diver, this fish was pulling line like a big yellow fin tuna connected to a freight train!
I gained some line, then off it goes again, another great run, screaming drag, rod doubled up. I began to gain more line and felt the fish come loose...
"It's off" I say to Matt, "NO...It's not, LOOK!" he says.
We see this monster salmon, 150 feet or so behind the boat, rocket thru the air, waving, laughing, mocking us. It was gone, it had spit the hook while bulleting up thru the water column, and just wanted to tease us.
Adios You Flying Pig You.
I'm POSITIVE that would have been my new personal best Champlain Landlocked!

We then turned south, headed along the NY shoreline to enjoy the scenery and wash some more lures. Dockside Ben is fishing with Northernnighmare along the Vermont side and they report loosing a big fish on a big spoon. "Purple/Pink with black and a white stripe" Ben says. Not satisfied with anything I have to match that, I break out my Tamiron tape and begin to make up a custom lure.
Just as I'm getting up to grab a rod to change up, the rod fires.
Fish on.

It feels nice, but it feels like a lake Trout. My light Daiwa Heartland Kokanee rod is doing the job and making it all the more fun. The fish stays deep, (55' down) head shaking, pulling, not wanting to raise to the surface. Finally it comes up and it doesn't look so much like a laker. I didn't get a good look at it but Matt does,,,

"It's green" he says, "Man it's a Steel-head!" " ahh but I've really never seen one" he Adds...

We laughed at that for what seemed like an hour while the fish decided to make a run...

Back to the boat I bring it and Matt slides the net under it. A very beautiful, clean, bright silver Landlocked. A fat football 22" clean, heavy. Finally, a fish for the box. A fish we end up sharing. A nice thick fillet each.

Our speeds ranged from 2.3 to 2.8 mph/GPS depending on the current, and we fished over deep water, greater than 150 feet, fishing from 40 to 80 feet down.

The lure that the fish took was a custom Honeybee MP-6 that I had taped up.

I gave the lure to Matt, I want him to feel the pull next time.
I'll make up another, or two, or seventeen!

Matt shot a short 50 second video while we were out.
Great Lake Champlain scenery on a hot summer day.
Check it out:
